Salix alba var vitellina ‘Basfordiana Farndon’
alba = white vitellina = like egg yolk
Basford and Farndon = towns in central England
Hybrid White Willow
This was selected for its yellow stems that turn orange in mid-summer and reddish by autumn. It makes an excellent display in winter. Great for coppicing and pollarding. There is a mystery about this: 'Basfordiana' was found in the town of Farndon and whether this is a legitimate name, I don't know. I haven't been able to find out anything about it from English growers. Hardy to Zone 3.
USES: As an ornamental tree or coppiced every year or two. Great for cutting for winter arrangements, indoors or out.
