Salix purpurea 'Jagiellonka'
purpurea = purple
Jagiellonka Purple Willow
Possible named after Queen Anna Jagiellonka of Poland (1523-1596).
'Jagiellonka' is a vigorous purpurea with purple/red new stems that mature to olive green to red shades. This is a lovely unbranched basket willow with fine rods growing 6-8ft each year after coppicing and bright blue-green leaves in spring. Left for a second year the rods grow 8-15ft, but with some branching near the top. Hardy to Zone 4.
Dried rod color: dark red?
USES: Coarse basketry, provides interesting texture and contrast in the garden and looks great in a summer arrangement.
Young growth on a dark red stem in mid-May

Dense growth of stems after two of coppicing years. Pale greenish-tan in the shade of all the foliage.
Photo in late October.

With catkin buds like these we will be able to determine the sex of this selection next spring. Photo in late October.

Leaves in late October are a dull green.
Notice they are wider above the middle and serrated.
Glaucous blue undersides of the leaves are typical of Salix purpurea.

In more sunlight the stems are gray. Mid-May.
