Salix suchowensis
suchow = an area of eastern China
Suchow Willow
NEW FOR 2018
This willow is native to eastern China in Provinces in Plains within 300-500 miles from the mouth of the Yangtze River. It is a widely cutivated willow in that part of China. It came to the USA as part of a group of Willows shared by Korean biofuel researchers to Prof. Larry Smart, at Cornell University for their biofuel hybridization program. Larry kindly shared this collection with me. It is similar in growth to Salix miyabeana, but is not in the same section of Willows; puzzling? Whatever, it's a cool willow, very slender, tall growing with long narrow green leaves that are grayish-green on the underside. There are paired long linear, dentate stipules at the base of the leaves that expose their grayish green undersides. The stems vary in color through the seasons: in late Winter they are pale tan, turning redder in Spring and bright red in Autumn. It is a pussy willow, flowering before the leaves, and a female selection. It sheds its budscales in late March and are catkins fully mature by late April. In autumn the bud scales are bright red. Hardy to Zone 4.
USES: For living willow structures and probaby for basketry.
Bright red stems and catkins; with elongated stipules at the base of the leaves in late October.
