Slender Catkin Willow
Another Willow from Larry Smart at Cornell University who received it from Korean biofuel developers. It is native to Western China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan along moutain rivers (where there is water). [This is a similar climate to New Mexico, where willows tend to grow naturally along mountain creeks and river banks.] It is a shrub that is said to grow to 13ft, but in VT it grows to 8ft in a single year after coppicing, so I would guess that it will grow taller in our climate. The branches vary in color during the year: tan in the late winter, green in mid-summer and red in autumn.
The female catkins are produced on a few short leaves at the base; are approximately 1/4in in diameter (from whence the name came) and about 1in long; green at first and turning brownish at maturity. Leaves are very lanceolate, 5in long by 1/2in wide; green on top and glaucous underneath, edges have glands atop the dentations. Stipules are slender and appear to clasp the stems from the base of the leaves. Produces long slender rods that may be suitable for basketry and small structures.
In Shangrila, Yunnan Province I believe I saw a small tree of this species planted in a small park. The trunk was 8in in diameter and had a trimmed rounded top and covered with female catkins. Sadly I was out looking for a cash machine and didn't have my camera with me and my cell phone had died. So no pics.!
Hardy to at least Zone 4.
USES: Produces long slender rods that may be suitable for basketry and small structures.

Red catkin buds appear in late October on red stems in the sun. Leaves and stipules remain green until a serious killing frost.
Long slender (dare I say it?) willowy stems with fine narrow leaves.
At the base of the stems in the shade, the color is light greenish tan and the thickness is only 1/2in.
Female catkins appear on short leafy stems in late April.
